[English]
Extended Abstract
Objectives: Water scarcity and soil physical degradation are among the major factors limiting plant growth and agricultural productivity, particularly in regions where water availability is limited and soil quality is declining. Soil texture and moisture conditions strongly influence water retention, pore characteristics, and the availability of water to plants. Pumice, as a porous mineral amendment, has the potential to improve soil physical properties, modify the pore system, enhance water-holding capacity, and consequently improve water availability to plants. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of pumice application on selected soil physical properties and the growth of peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) under different soil moisture conditions and in soils with contrasting textures.
Methodology: A greenhouse experiment was conducted as a split–split plot experiment based on a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. The experimental treatments included two irrigation levels based on optimum soil moisture (75% of the available water for plants) and water-deficit irrigation (50% of the available water for plants), two soil textures (clay loam and sandy loam), and three pumice application rates (0, 4, and 8 g kg⁻¹ soil). Irrigation treatments were imposed after complete establishment of the seedlings. Soil moisture conditions were controlled based on the available water content of each soil and maintained by monitoring the moisture status of the pots. At the end of the growing period, plant biomass (fresh and dry weight) and major soil physical properties, including bulk density, porosity, void ratio, water-holding capacity, plasticity index, and aggregate stability, were measured. The effects of irrigation level, soil texture, pumice application, and their interactions were evaluated statistically.
Results: Decreasing the available water from 75% to 50% resulted in a significant reduction in plant biomass and was associated with declines in selected soil physical properties. Compared with the 75% available-water condition, the void ratio decreased by 3.7% and 1.9% in the clay loam and sandy loam soils, respectively, while water-holding capacity decreased by 13% and 14%, respectively. In contrast, pumice application reduced bulk density and increased soil porosity, water-holding capacity, plasticity index, and aggregate stability. Application of 8 g pumice kg⁻¹ soil increased soil porosity by up to 8.4% and water-holding capacity by up to 24.2% compared with the control. Pumice application also increased fresh plant weight under water-deficit irrigation, indicating its potential to improve plant growth under limited water availability. The magnitude of the pumice effect varied with soil texture and moisture condition, highlighting the importance of considering the interaction between amendment application and soil characteristics.
Conclusion: Overall, pumice application, particularly in the clay loam soil, improved several soil physical properties and reduced the adverse effects associated with limited soil water availability, thereby enhancing peppermint growth. These findings indicate that pumice may be a potentially effective mineral amendment for improving soil physical conditions, enhancing water retention, and supporting plant production under water-limited conditions. The observed responses also demonstrate that the effectiveness of pumice application depends on soil texture and moisture conditions, which should be considered when developing management strategies for improving soil physical quality and crop production under limited water availability.
