| چکیده [English] | ||
| The rapid growth of the global population has significantly increased the demand for food, making high-yield agriculture a primary priority. To meet this demand, the use of plastic in agriculture (commonly known as Plasticulture) has emerged as a vital technology to optimize resources and protect crops from environmental stresses. While Plasticulture offers immense economic benefits, the accumulation of plastic waste in farmlands and orchards poses severe threats to the ecosystem, soil health, and human safety. This review aims to explore the multifaceted dimensions of plastic use in agriculture, focusing on its benefits, environmental challenges, and management protocols within the Iranian and international contexts. Plastics are preferred over traditional materials due to their unique engineering properties, such as a high strength-to-weight ratio, chemical resistance, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. Economically, Plasticulture can increase crop yields by 50% to 100%, accelerate harvest times by 10 to 25 days, and improve product quality. Resource-wise, it can save 45% to 70% of water through micro-irrigation and mulch, while reducing fertilizer use by 30% to 40%. Applications span various sub-sectors: • Agronomy: Mulch films and irrigation tapes (PE, PVC). • Horticulture: Greenhouse covers (LDPE/EVA), anti-hail nets, and seedling trays. • Livestock/Fisheries: Silage wraps, mesh floorings, geomembranes for ponds, and floating cages. • Agrochemicals: Highly resistant multi-layer bottles for pesticides (HDPE/PET) and veterinary supplies like syringes and ear tags. The fate of agricultural plastics often follows the D3 model: Damaged (accidental release during use), Degraded (fragmentation into microplastics via UV and oxidation), or Discarded (intentional dumping due to lack of collection systems). These residues degrade into microplastics, which can be absorbed by plant roots and enter the human food chain, potentially causing cancers, immune disorders, and neurological issues. Furthermore, improper disposal (such as open burning) releases toxic dioxins and heavy metals into the air, contributing to climate change. Effective management follows the 6R hierarchy suggested by the FAO: Refuse, Redesign, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recovery (energy extraction). Biodegradable plastics, particularly those that pass standards, offer a promising alternative by converting into water and CO2 via microbial action, though they face challenges regarding high costs and specific environmental requirements for decomposition. In Iran, the Waste Management Law (2004) and the Regulation on Reducing Plastic Bag Consumption (2022) provide the legal basis for management. Responsibility for "special waste" (toxic or infectious) lies with the producer (farmer/veterinarian), while "ordinary waste" is managed by municipalities. A critical focus is placed on empty pesticide containers. International (FAO/EPA) and national protocols mandate Triple Rinsing (filling 1/4 with water, shaking for 10 seconds, and repeating three times) to remove 99.99% of residues. Containers must then be punctured to prevent reuse for food/water and stored securely. Similarly, veterinary waste (infectious plastics and sharps) must be collected in Safety Boxes, sterilized via autoclave or microwave, and disposed of in authorized landfills. Sustainable agriculture requires transitioning from traditional burial and burning to a circular economy model. This involves adopting biodegradable polymers, enhancing local recycling infrastructure, and strictly enforcing triple-rinse protocols to protect the long-term viability of agricultural lands. | ||
