[English]
Gypsophila saponarioides is a perennial, tuft-forming, rock-dwelling plant belonging to the family Caryophyllaceae. This species is endemic to Mount Somamus in Gilan Province, Iran. In the present study, the conservation status of G. saponarioides was assessed according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines using three criteria: area of occupancy, extent of occurrence, and population size. Field surveys estimated the area of occupancy (AOO) of G. saponarioides at 2 km², while its extent of occurrence (EOO) was estimated at 3.37 km² using GeoCAT software. Based on the results of this assessment, G. saponarioides was classified as Critically Endangered (CR). Livestock overgrazing, increasing numbers of hikers and tourists, particularly motorcyclists and off-road vehicle users, as well as climate change and global warming, are among the major threats contributing to habitat degradation and population decline in the region. Therefore, protecting the habitat of this rare, locally endemic species is essential. Coordinated conservation measures by Iran's Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization and the Department of Environment are particularly important for safeguarding the species and preventing further declines in its population.
