[English]
The convolvulus hawkmoth, Agrius convolvuli (L.), is a species characterized by a wide geographic distribution and high migratory capacity. Despite sporadic reports of its presence in Iran, knowledge regarding its ecological interactions and host associations across diverse ecosystems remains limited. In the present study, field surveys were conducted in sugarcane fields in Ahvaz, Iran, to investigate the feeding behavior of this species. Adult specimens were collected using light traps and identified morphologically; their species identity was subsequently confirmed by specialists at the Natural History Museum, London. Our findings reveal a strong trophic interaction between the larvae of A. convolvuli and the field bindweed, Convolvulus arvensis L. Larval feeding on leaf laminas resulted in significant defoliation of bindweed plants along the margins of the sugarcane fields. To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first documented record of A. convolvuli feeding activity on C. arvensis in Khuzestan province. The results highlight the potential of this species as a biological control agent for C. arvensis within sugarcane agroecosystems; however, further investigations are warranted to assess its host range and field efficacy.
