[English]
The Scalloped Spiny Lobster (Panulirus homarus) is a big deal for Iran’s fisheries, especially in the Sea of Oman. Given its high economic value, there’s real potential for aquaculture, but a few tough hurdles stand in the way of commercial success. The lobsters have a long larval phase—six to twelve months, stretching over 11 to 13 stages, which presents significant biological challenges for large-scale hatchery production. Furthermore, existing feed formulas aren’t where they need to be yet, especially in providing enough HUFAs, which are critical for juvenile development, disease resistance, and growth rate optimization. On top of that, wild populations are under a lot of pressure from fishing, creating an urgent necessity for sustainable alternatives to stabilize stock levels.
However, Iran’s southern coastline—particularly the Makran extending from Sirik to Gwatar offers highly favorable conditions for lobster farming. This region provides geographic advantages that offset the technical difficulties of production. The sea stays warm (around 26.5°C) and salty (36 to 37.5 ppt), which is just right for these lobsters to grow. The water’s stable, and there’s plenty of coastline where you could build concrete ponds. There are also natural rocky spots where young lobsters like to settle. Combine all that, and this spot looks perfect for developing lobster fattening farms. Research shows that you find the most juveniles in spring and autumn, which lines up well for collecting and raising them to market size in sea cages or coastal ponds.
