[English]
Introduction:Oxidative stress, frequently triggered by dexamethasone, represents a critical challenge in modern poultry production, negatively affecting growth rate, intestinal barrier function, and microbial homeostasis. Natural antioxidants like alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and phytogenic feed additives such as ajwain extract have gained attention as viable alternatives to conventional growth promoters. Objective: The present study was designed to investigate the individual and combined effects of dietary ALA and ajwain extract on growth performance, slaughter traits, cecal microbiata populations and jejunal morphology in broiler chickens subjected to dexamethasone induced oxidative stress. Methods: A total of 250 one day old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were randomly allotted to five experimental groups: NC (unchallenged control), PC (dexamethasone challenged control), PC + ALA (300 mg/kg diet), PC + AJ (ajwain extract at 400 mg/kg diet), and PC + ALA+AJ (combination of both). Results:The combined ALA and ajwain supplementation resulted in significantly improved feed conversion ratio and increased carcass percentage (P < 0.05). ajwain extract alone led to a significant rise in cecal Lactobacillus counts (P < 0.05). Furthermore, both ajwain extract alone and its combination with ALA notably increased jejunal villus height and absorptive surface area (P < 0.05). Regarding nutrient utilization, the combined treatment enhanced apparent crude fat digestibility, while ajwain extract independently improved apparent crude protein digestibility (P < 0.05). Conclusions:Overall, the findings confirm that ajwain extract, especially when co administered with alpha lipoic acid, effectively attenuates the detrimental effects of dexamethasone challenge. This synergistic combination supports superior growth efficiency, intestinal morphological development, and nutrient digestibility, highlighting its potential as an effective natural strategy to manage oxidative stress and enhance gut health in broiler production.
