| Abstract | ||
| Flowering initiation was compared between 21 annual hybrids in a test cross programe. Annual hybrids were obtained when 21 sugar beet pollinators were crossed to an annual CM line (AMS) as a maternal parent. The annual CMS line was also used as a check in the experiment. For each hybrid family, the relative frequency of flowering plants at different weeks of flowering period showed that some hybrids flowered earlier and others later than the annual line. It seems probable that genes responsible for bolting susceptibility cause earlier formation of flowers in the annual hybrids. Since genes with dominance effects are effective for both bolting susceptibility and bolting resistance, by expressing these genes in the hybrids, homozygous lines that differ slightly in bolting may disclose remarkable dissimilarities after crossing to an annual hybrid. Further search on the correlation between earliness of annual hybrids and bolting tendency of respective pollinators due to cold treatment is inevitable. | ||
